Débrouillard is named after the French word for resourcefulness—a quality deeply woven into Modern Pentathlon's origins.

On November 10, 1910, Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games, awarded Theodore Roosevelt the Diplôme des Débrouillards, an honor recognizing versatility, resilience and athleticism.

Coubertin believed that true excellence came not from narrow specialization, but from cultivating a diverse range of abilities.
